Ruby worries that tricks are hard in the Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop
Tricks are hard

Ruby Is Trick-Challenged

When we were first invited to participate in the Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop, we enthusiastically agreed. A few weeks later reality set in. Ruby doesn’t have the best track record for learning new things. New things are hard for her and kind of stress her out.

But we are not quitters so we forged ahead. With the help of my daughter (Mini-Me), we set out to teach Ruby a trick – pretty much any trick that would stick. We started with give paw, but after multiple attempts and bags of chips (for us, not Ruby) we gave up.

Next we tried spin in a circle. I didn’t actually think it would work, but Mini-Me was bound and determined to teach Ruby something – ANYTHING.

Ruby practices sitting as the first step to learning to circle
But at least I know how to sit

Here's How We Taught Ruby To Spin In A Circle

1. First we had Ruby sit. This is the one thing she actually does quite well.

2. Next I stood in front of her and repeated the word “circle”. She looked at me like I was nuts for the first 100 times.

3. While I repeated “circle”, Mini-Me circled Ruby with a treat.

Ruby learns a half spin almost circle in the Trick or Treat Hop
Half circle

4. During this phase my husband repeatedly walked by shaking his head in disbelief. But we kept our eyes on the prize (and Ruby’s eyes on the treat) and kept going.

5. Ruby eventually started following Mini-Me (and the treat) in a circle. We, of course, praised and rewarded her.

6. And finally, after many more attempts (like 500), Ruby got the idea and started circling on her own. Success!

I am not sure who is more excited about this accomplishment Mini-Me or Ruby. Mini-Me is now determined to teach Ruby even more tricks and build her confidence so she can come to BlogPaws with us.

Bonus point: Rosie observed the whole process from the sidelines and pretty much taught herself to circle. Like many cats, she’s clearly the smartest and most confident member of the household. She is also hearing impaired so relies on hand signals rather than voice commands. Check out the final results for both Ruby AND Rosie in the video below.

The moral of this story: anything is possible with enough treats, chips, patience and a couple of determined girls who don’t give up (Mini-Me and Rosie). Ruby and I were just along for the ride.

Great job!! The things that challenge us the most, are most often the things that bring the greatest reward. Now that you know she can learn a trick, you will be able to teach more!

My dog does not know this trick. I tried to teach her but she wouldn't do it.

Rachel Monn said...

She doesn't know this but I think this is one she could learn

Sherry Butcher said...

my dog Blackie is 14 years old and I'm not sure he wants to learn trick. I'm sure this would help both of us. Thanks for sharing you trainning.

Talent Hounds said...

Congrats to you mini me and Ruby. I need a mini-me here LOL. Ruby sounds a lot like Kilo. Tricks take a while but he sure enjoys treats and practising. The only thing he could do was "sit" for a long time but now he loves spin as long as he is following a treat.

Yay, Ruby {and Mini-Kristin!} My cats usually look at me like, "That's a good trick Mom! Do it again!"

Bouncing Bertie said...

Most impressed by your persistence. My former dog Hamish the Westie, adopted age four, steadfastly refused to learn a single trick during his ten years with me. Oh how I - and others - tried with "paw". He didn't even obey "sit" in any reliable sense!
Cheers, Gail.
PS Bertie, by contrast, has been quite amenable to training. Two very different terriers.

Susan P. said...

We are currently working on this trick. It's slow going.

Linda Szymoniak said...

My current three dogs don't know this trick, but I had a dog a while back - my Beagle/Shepherd mix, Misty - who did. Her command for it was "dance", and she'd spin around so cute. She wasn't a small dog, either, so it was especially fun to watch her.

Emma said...

Madison does spin and twirl. She learned in puppy Einstein class. Spin is to the right and twirl is to the left. A fun and simple trick to learn. Good work Ruby!

Dianne H. said...

My girl does not know this trick, but it has been on my "to try and teach list" ;-) I'll give it a go now that I've seen you demo and instructions. Thanks!

Yay...a team effort, I love it! I don't know if I'd be able to join this hop if we didn't have Luke. I'm not sure I could ever get our beagle to do a trick, but you inspire me...maybe I'll try it one of these days!

evie said...

Evie could do this, but my 2 girls now cant really, sometimes they can get a half circle. but not full. Evie was so good at everything, she could dance on her hind legs and even won a dancing contest.

Our pups know spin left and spin right. They also know to do the trick if I spin my finger in a circular motion at the ground. I taught them by putting the treat next to their hindquarters and kept moving it with them until the completed a circle. It kind of forced them to go around in a circle.

Pat Schwab said...

No our pup doesn't know this trick but has responded well to treat training so far. Thanks

Odin does not know this trick. I thik it is cute but I had the unfortunate experience of adopting a sheltie whos previous owner kept him crated many hours (most hours) of the day. Rowdy the sheltie spun and spun he wore holes in the carpet, he spun so much so I have avoided his trick. He went to the bridge from old age and never did quite the behavior.
