Ruby On K-9s For Cops

Earlier in August Ruby visited the bison in Custer State Park in South Dakota and last week the K-9s For Cops public art installation in her hometown of Chicago. It's been quite a summer!

On display from July through Labor Day, K-9s for Cops honored the canine unit and fallen police officers while raising funds for the families of officers wounded or killed in the line of duty and free spay/neuter services for residents in economically challenged communities. K-9s For Cops included more than 100 54-inch-tall fiberglass German Shepard statues standing guard in downtown Chicago, primarily along the magnificent mile.

The statues were designed by Chicago artists and sponsored by local businesses and individuals. They will be auctioned off with the goal of raising $250,000 for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation and PAWS Chicago. Here are a few of our favorites - sorry, we forgot to write down the artist's name or title.

Ruby was sadly not asked to model or participate in this campaign but she still wanted to show support in her own special way. The K-9 Police Academy has also ignored her calls (she may have to give up the dream of being a K-9 hero and stick to blogging and just being cute).

  13. That is SO cool. We live in Chicago, we need to go see that. Grandpa and Grandma were both Law Enforcement Officers, which makes it even cooler. Mom is just a boring fed who doesn't have a private jet to fly her around to solve crime like everyone on TV that has a job like hers. BORING Mom.

  19. Dear Ruby, you can be whatever you want to be. Sure, you don't look like the other K-9 officers, but your limits are only the ones you place on yourself. You've done amazingly in fighting your fears to enjoy life - you've seriously kicked some @$$.

  30. Well crap, I didn't realize the dogs are only up through Labor Day, guess I missed another blog opportunity! Your pictures are so good there is no way I could have done those with Dolly as she will only let me get about a foot away to take a picture! BTW I'm totally against the foundation but that's an opinion for another time! Sandra and Dolly

  32. Love this post! As the wife of NYS Trooper, and cousin and niece of NYPD officers, this touches home for me. Those statues of the K9 heroes are truly beautiful. They do something similar with horses in a nearby town. How I'd love to be a proud owner of one of these amazing works of canine art for so many reasons. Aw, Ruby, you are cute...maybe they will make you an honorary K9 hero and let you do a ride-along?!
