The Farmer's Dog: Ruby's Results

We started Ruby on The Farmer's Dog in mid-June and the results have been remarkable. The Farmer's Dog is a personalized, ready-to-serve, pre-proportioned, subscription-based dog food made from fresh, human-grade, minimally processed ingredients sourced from restaurant suppliers and local farms. When you sign up for The Farmer's Dog, you create an individual profile based on your dog's size, age, breed, medical conditions, allergies, activity level, etc. The Farmer's Dog then creates a meal plan just for your dog delivered right to your door. To learn more about how the program works, check out my first post here.

The Farmer's Dog: Ruby's Results

Portion Control = Weight Loss

Ruby has always had trouble with portion control. It's a rescue dog thing - must eat everything in case there is no more. In full disclosure, I am also probably guilty of overfeeding at times as portion control is confusing and pet food labels misleading (not to mention my eyesight is not great and I have trouble reading teeny-tiny print). With The Farmer's Dog, there's no guesswork. Food arrives with a custom meal plan and specific instructions in easy-to-read print.

Ruby has lost two pounds since starting on The Farmer's Dog in mid-June and is now sporting her new slim and trim summer body! Two pounds may not sound like much, but she's a small dog and a little goes a long way. Even a few extra pounds on a small dog increases their risk of obesity-related issues like heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Bottom line: Ruby looks and feels great and is now the perfect weight for her size, age, and breed.

Looking Good AND Feeling GREAT

Ruby's energy has tripled since starting on The Farmer's Dog. She genuinely seems to feel better which has resulted in increased stamina, longer walks, and more play time. Whereas she was sometimes sluggish on walks in the past, she's now more enthusiastic, engaged, and interested in the world around her.

When we take care of ourselves physically (healthy diet and regular exercise) we feel better emotionally - same goes for dogs. Ruby feels better and as a result is much more confident. She's always been hesitant (and occasionally reactive) around other dogs, but lately has surprised me by confidently greeting other dogs we meet on walks.

Although Ruby is still occasionally reactive with some men, we have managed to get over the hump with other dogs - hurray! I used to avoid certain dogs because they freaked her out so much. But her attitude has totally changed this summer. I think she feels better and is more relaxed and confident as a result.

The Farmer's Dog's recipes are all human grade, minimally processed with ingredients from local farms and restaurant suppliers

Less Itch AND Irritation

Ruby has Cutaneous vasculitis which is an inflammation of the skin blood vessels that present as swelling, redness, rash, and itching. Ruby's issues are contained to her ears, but some dogs have it on their nose, tail, and paws. Although there can be other causes, our vet believes Ruby's issues are autoimmune in nature.

Ruby was first diagnosed with ear vasculitis in the summer of 2015. We have tried several different prescriptions, which keep the condition stable but never make it go away completely. While it hasn't vanished entirely, we have noticed a huge improvement since starting The Farmer's Dog. The affected area is about half the size it was a month ago! In addition, she is generally less itchy and more comfortable overall!

All this sounds great, but how does Ruby REALLY feel about The Farmer's Dog?

Ruby LOVES it - as in she goes kind of crazy for it. With each delivery, she receives a turkey and a beef recipe (variety is the spice of life). The turkey includes turkey, parsnips, chickpeas, carrots, broccoli and spinach and the beef recipe includes beef, lentils, sweet potatoes, beef liver, carrot, kale, and sunflower seeds. All recipes are formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists. What's not to love?

  8. That's great to hear that Ruby had such positive results. 2 lbs is a lot for a small dog. I bet she's feeling better too! And it even helped her Cutaneous vasculitis? That's just awesome!

  10. I love seeing some good, wholesome food options for dogs now. The options seem to be popping up "like mushrooms after the rain" (Czech expression). I think that's awesome.

  12. What a fantastic report!!!We are going to look at the website, but Mom suspects it may be a bit pricey with a multi-dog family. We are so happy that Ruby has had such wonderful results.

  14. Wow! Those are some results! The weight loss is fantastic! Glad Ruby has done so well on this food, and is thriving; what a load off your mind that has to be. I'm seeing several home prepared custom meal services for dogs pop up, it seems. I hope this one stays around a long time for you and Ruby! She's adorable, by the way.

  16. Ruby looks great! Two pounds in two month seems like a substantial weight loss (but in a healthy way) for a medium dog! I'm glad she is feeling so good!

  17. I'm so happy for you and Ruby! She looks great and couldn't be cuter. This food service sounds interesting and if I had small dogs it would be a no brainer for me. The health benefits of a whole food diet alone would justify the costs I'm sure. I did have a question though - is this raw food or cooked when you get it?

  25. I didn't think food could have such an impact on every facet of our lives. As much as I love my doughnuts ... maybe it's time to reconsider. It's wonderful seeing Ruby blossom into herself. I'd love if Farmers ventured into the feline side. Bear is overweight and I think Ellie has some kind of gastro-intestinal irritation - I think both could benefit from something like this.

  27. This looks like a really great option! Too often people overfeed without knowing they are doing so! Good food, and easily portioned.

  28. I'm amazed at how great Ruby is doing on this food! I laughed when you mentioned portion control; I'm pretty good at measuring my dogs' food out and sticking to the portions. My husband, however, not so much, LOL! I can see the spring in Ruby's step and her excitement in the video, she's so happy!
