Pip and His Mighty Terrier Heart

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

Three years ago today, we lost our sweet Pip. He was diagnosed in 2011 with heart disease and given six to twelve months. But he defied the odds and lived almost two more years. During that time, my mom battled cancer, my father had heart surgery and then a stroke, another family member was diagnosed with severe dementia, my daughter had her second surgery to correct a congenital birth defect, we bought and sold two houses, and moved twice.

Pip had an enlarged heart that was made worse by a partially collapsed trachea (the result of past neglect). But against all odds, he fought with all his terrier might to stay with us. And when we were finally settled in a permanent home and the various family medical crises were either resolved or stabilized, he let go. I still find it heartbreaking and sadly ironic that he died of heart disease, specifically an enlarged heart, because Pip was ALL heart. He had the biggest, most generous, beautiful heart of anyone, animal or human, I have ever known.

I took some time off from blogging before returning with Ruby in 2015. Many new followers (who never knew Pip) have probably been confused by our blog name. I made a conscious choice to keep the name and spirit of Pip alive because for me, he's still the heart of the blog. Here are a few of my favorite memories of Pip.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

Pip was a true terrier and liked to stir things up from time to time.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He had the best sweater collection on the planet.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He was a dreamer of big dreams

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

and made me believe anything was possible.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He loved meeting his blog friends in real life

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

but secretly preferred the company of cats (he really did).

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He loved making people laugh

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

and was a master of funny faces.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He had his own sense of style ...

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

especially around the holidays.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He loved the water ...

and his family

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

and his couch.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

He was frightened of small things, but incredibly brave when it mattered most.

Remembering Pip of The Daily Pip

Pip was my "heart of hearts" and I miss him every single day. So many wonderful things have happened with the blog this year - I only wish he was here to share and celebrate with me.

I am just so glad that I got to know Pip a little before he crossed the rainbow; and I love his book! You certainly had a big couple of years... good to look back and find that those things, too, have passed. Blessings, YAM xx

I can't believe (well I can) that it's been 3 years.... In some ways it feels like yesterday. Pip captured a big piece of my heart and I miss him. But I do know he and Alex are playing together....

We miss Pip very much...and had no idea three years has gone by already. You sure had quite the time of it with so much happening in your household. I understand the concept of "Heart Dog" very much as that was my Zippo...he was my big guy...the big brother to the girls and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss him. Hugs to you today!

What an adorable little fellow. We never knew about him before, so thank you for sharing. We would leave his name on the blog as well.

We 200% AGREE WITH THE TITLE. Pip is the reason for the blog and he was a fierce warrior for his family and for Shelter animals. It is only fitting the blog be in honor of him. For an itty bitty dog he had the biggest heart and I think in his mind he was a Great Dane. We did not realize it had been 3 years since he passed. Madi says she still remembers going to the dance with him early on and OH did he have some moves. She loved it when he dipped her.
Hugs and lots of love Madi and Cecilia

I'm so glad to finally learn more about Pip! He must have been amazing. I wish I could offer a nugget of comfort or some useful words of understanding, but I'm coming up blank. People always claim that it gets easier - but I don't think so. There's just a new normal and a new way of living without that essential component of your heart.

Oh Pip, it is so good to see all the memories of you. We sure do miss you. We are so glad that Mom kept the name of the blog at 'Pip'. You were just the best. Ruby is great too. You all have a great day.

I seriously have tears in my eyes reading this lovely tribute. Of course you would keep Pip's memory alive, and this blog is a wonderful tribute. Plus the pictures are stunning! What a terrible year - and it's enough to have one of those things happen but all of them at the same time? These pics are so sweet - I love that you pulled a gallery together to remember Pip, thanks for sharing this.

We remember Pip. We're glad that you kept Pip's name as part of your blog title. My peeps lost their first set of "kids" more than 12 years ago. But at dusk on every anniversary of their passing, my dad turns on the front porch light and leaves it on overnight until the next morning, when he turns it off. My dad says that it's so they can find their way home if they feel like visiting. So we understand how you feel about Pip.
