Water Versus Fire

Pip loved water. Even in his older years, when he saw a river or a lake, his tail would wag with excitement and his body would shake with joy and if we let him, he would run towards the water and leap right in. I had planned on taking him to the ocean, but when he was diagnosed with heart disease longer trips became dangerous.

And so when we decided to visit to the East Coast this summer, there was no question in my mind that we should bring Ruby. After leaving Niagara Falls, we drove east across New York State and beautiful Western Massachusetts and arrived finally in Dennis, MA on Cape Cod.

I assumed Ruby would love the ocean

but I was wrong.

We spent hours searching for a dog friendly beach

and when we finally found the perfect spot

she wanted no part of it.

Although Ruby didn't care for the ocean, she loved camping and cool nights curled up by the campfire. She savored the smells and the sounds and seemed mesmerized by the flames.

Pip disliked campfires as much as Ruby disliked the ocean. Swimming in the ocean and sitting around a campfire are two of my most favorite things. Both fire and water quiet my mind and soothe my heart. Just like Pip and Ruby in their own individual ways.

If you are looking for a beautiful, safe, secluded, dog-friendly beach on Cape Cod, check out Crowes Reservation Beach. The parking is a ways from the beach and does require a bit of hike, but it is absolutely worth the effort!

  2. Earl and Ethel aren't too keen either. But they will sometimes venture in bravely!!

  3. Toby loves camping but water, not so much. It's funny how each dog is so individual in their preferences despite breed, size, or what other dogs enjoy.

  4. Ruby I'm with you... that's not my favorite place... but hey you were brave enough to put your paws in that ocean, BRAVO! I refused to take a walk there and my dad had to carry me along the beach... the people there thought my dad is completely nuts :o)

  10. We dislike the water greatly. However, we think we'd rather like camping.

  11. Hailey likes neither and Phod enjoys both! They do keep us on our toes don't they!

  12. I didn't think Reilly and Denny would ever like the ocean seeing how they both hate water - it took quite a few visits and even though they still step so much as a toe in the water they now love running on the beach and exploring - so don't give up - she may just need a few visits to get use to the smells and noise of the ocean :)

  14. Mom grew up in Western MA - you need to go back in the fall and see all the gorgeous colors of the Berkshires. Mom also spent many vacations on Cape Cod and other beaches along the coast - how she misses it:(

We don't think we would like the ocean either, but we sure would love to run on the beach:)

  15. Every dog is different, right Ruby? Even though you did not like the ocean, at least you found out you liked the warm toasty fire. :)

  18. Cute pics! It's funny how their personalities can be so distinct. They definitely know their minds! We've never tried camping with Rita - I think she would hate it, since she's not a fan of strange noises. Or... she would love it, but the campers around us would hate us since she would bark at any new noise. :) But she does LOVE the water. (Hates to swim, but loves the water. Go figure.)

  19. There is something so soothing about looking at fire or water...when it's under control, that is. We'd like to go to a beach, but would probably spend all our time digging in the sand. We're not sure we'd like aggressive water!

  20. Aww, at least she was willing to try it! My dogs won't even get their feet wet.

  23. Every dog is special and has their unique loves. Our R loves the water but is terrified of campfires. I'm guessing that he and Pip must have discussed this at some point ;)

  24. Abby is the same way - went out into the stream in the park and came right back out. She'd have NO part of the kiddie pool. I am finally getting a transfer to home office so I won't be commuting to Indianapolis from Chicago every week. If you know of any great parks for dogs out in the Western suburbs (Lagrange and West) please pass it on as even though we own a house there I've not had time to explore the city much since we got married in 2013 and moved.

  25. That's the interesting thing about us cats and dogs...we're each different...which makes us each special. :)

  28. I so agree that water is so soothing to my heart and soul. The pics are great! And it looks like Ruby loved to snuggle up and camp, even is she didn't like the waves! At least you were surrounded by the sounds of the waves, and memories of dear Pip. Happy National Dog Day!

  29. I loved the pics. At least Ruby had the beach to relax on and soak up the sun. I have a feeling my Jack Russell would not have liked the ocean either. She's not a fan of water and the waves would have scared her. LOL

  34. Muffy loves water but surprised me by being a little overwhelmed the first time at the beach. I kicked of my shoes and ran in then she followed (on her long lead) and we had a good paddle.
I love camp fires but not many places left you can have them in the UK. She enjoys our real fire in winter though. Muffy is very much loving caravanning.
Poor Ruby. I guess that sea is a bit more daunting than a muddy puddle.

  35. Lee has never seen the ocean but she loves sitting by the Ohio River and listening to it lap at the edge and all of her Scots have enjoyed the water. Ruby it sounds like you had a magnificent vacation. But I am with Pip in liking the water but not so much the camping.
    Thanks for being a friend

  39. At least she gave it a try! None of the Girls will even go NEAR water. Not sure with the little ones, Mazie's dislike I am sure is rooted in her abuse prior to my rescuing her. Love the pictures of sweet Ruby!

  40. I love how they have differences - what great pictures

  41. I haven't had a god yet who loved water. I'll have to see if newbie Samson is a fan of the sea. Sitting around a campfire does sound very relaxing, though! :)
