Top Ten Reasons To Adopt A Shelter Cat

Adopt a cat month

June is Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month and that means it's a great time to expand your family with a new furry friend!

Although I am best known as a dog blogger, truth be told, I am also a cat person. I would love to feature Rosie more on the blog, but well, you know, she doesn’t always cooperate.

We have always been a cat-centric household and when we adopted Pip (our first dog) we had five cats all of which were former strays. Ruby loves cats and so did Pip. There was even some question about whether Pip was actually part cat. Long time followers will recall his fondness for cat food and catnip!

adopt cats

In celebration of Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month, here’s our take on the top ten reasons to adopt a shelter cat.

1.   Cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one.  Well, you could, but why?
2.   Cats are free spirits who march to the beat of their own drummer. And if that drummer feels like playing at 3:00 in the morning so be it.
3.   Cats care about the planet and the environment.  Cats believe in energy and water conservation and do their part by sleeping 15 hours a day and taking very short baths.
4.   Cats make great couch companions. Cats won’t judge you if you stay in your pajamas and watch bad TV all day. Well, they might judge you, but not in a mean way.
5.  Cats are clean, neat and organized. And that’s why cats require dedicated staff.
6.   Cats improve sleep and cure insomnia. The sound of a cat purring is relaxing and soothing and the warmth of their cuddles like an electric blanket on a cold night. Just be sure not to move or disturb their sleep or all bets are off.
7.   Cats are not quitters. Cats pursue what they want when they want it. And if that means occasionally bopping you in the face or tipping over a glass of water to get your attention, so be it. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
8.   Cats make great yoga teachers. Cats are naturally graceful and limber and understand the benefits of a good stretch.  Note to humans: cat yoga requires years of experience and training. Do not try at home without strict feline supervision.
9.   Cats are great listeners. Cats have mastered the art of listening or at least, the art of making you think they are listening. What were you saying again?
10. Cats make great mentors and role models. Cats are confident, driven, and not afraid to say no. They have much to teach humans about self-preservation and putting our own needs first – after their needs, of course.
Cats are affectionate, dedicated, loving companions who add joy, energy and light to our lives and hearts. Please consider adoption: visit your local rescue and adopt a shelter cat today!

Mr. Da Vinci was right... cat's are masterpieces...and when we hear a purr on our lap and can enjoy their company we feel peace... that's a good reason to adopt such a little zen-master, right?

Great blog! Great reasons to adopt a Shelter Cat. I’m a former shelter cat. Need I say more?

Great post! Sometimes I really really really want to get a cat. (We had one for a while when we lived in Bermuda - she was an awesome cuddler!) But there are three things that stop me - 1) I'm allergic, although I do tend to get over it after a while. 2) that "playing at 3:00 in the morning" thing. 3) Rita HATES cats. It's just not possible cuz of #3!

Rosie is just so pretty, wish she would cooperate more. Sadly Mom says we could never have a cat here, just not in our genes to do well with one, although we do love all our virtual kitty pals. We wish all furries, cats, dogs, rabbits, etc. could find wonderful forever homes.

Awesome post! And I might add a reason. When you adopt a cat from a shelter, particularly a senior cat, you really are saving a life. That's a wonderful, wonderful feeling.

Great reasons! Mr. N is too much of a terrier for longtime cat harmony, I think!

Yes,, those are all good reasons for sure, Do you know what? Another cat adopted us,,,, Yes,, dumped here,, And we had to get a cage to take it to the vet to get fixed,, cause the rule is,,,
if you live here,,, NO BABY kittys or puppys.
Turns out it was already fixed.. now it left our house,, which is good cause we have 5 cats here already,, all dumped!

Rosie is such a beautiful cat. We love the caption "... still not looking at the camera." Two of the three of us came from a shelter/rescue, and Ashton was found injured on the road. Shelter kitties are wonderful family members!

Lees first pet was a kitty, the best cat ever. Why she dressed it in doll outfits and pushed it around in a buggy. It would play marbles with her. It loved to eat asparagus. We support the Give It Ten movement and send kitties on the van to get their bubblectomy to help.
Thanks for being a friend

Wonderful reasons to adopt a shelter cat! We support adoption 100%! Three of us were adopted, and two of us were rescued off the streets. So obvious the mom agrees that cats are like potato chips… you can't have just one!!!

Great reasons to adopt a cat! Except that we can't - R is cat-aggressive. Interestingly, Shyla's best friend in her first home was a cat! So, she'd love it.

That is very good advice for cats and dogs. Adopting and rescuing is the best.

We were a dog-centric house when cats started to invade 30 years ago. Now it is all cats and only cats; though we still love dogs. I would love to adopt more kitties, but we are at our limit! Definitely good reasons to adopt.
