My Hero ...

In honor of Blog the Change for Animals, I would like to introduce you to my good friend Huey. Huey and I were both admitted to Red Door Animal Shelter in 2001. But while I was quickly adopted, Huey has spent the last 9 years at the shelter. The shelter is a nice place and Huey gets tons of love, but it is not a real home.

Huey is a “special needs” cat with an emphasis on the special. As a kitten he was so severely abused that his little body was broken into pieces. And despite multiple surgeries and years of traditional and alternative therapies, he has permanent damage to his spinal cord and little or no control over his tail, hind legs, and bladder.

But the really SPECIAL thing about Huey is his super duper positive outlook on life. He is a happy-go-lucky guy with a sincere love of life, people, and other cats. He never complains (except when volunteers refuse to share their lunch or fail to give him the attention he deserves). Huey is one in a million and a true inspiration to everyone who knows him!

Without further ado, meet Huey!

If you would like to leave Huey a message, please visit the shelter blog.

  3. Oh, Pip, that was a most touching movie about Most Beautiful Huey. I think it's just amazing that he is so very luving even after what he's been through. My paws are crossed and I'm sending out super pawerful brindle wishes that maybe, just maybe, Huey will find his own special home.

  24. And YOU are MY hero for posting this for Blog for the Change. I totally forgot about this today and I feel bad now because I didn't mention it in my post today.

Huey is a cutie! So sad he's spent way too long at the shelter. At least he's being fed daily and gets love but it's just not the same as a loving home.

  27. Huey sure is a hero. Thank you for introducing him to us. I sure do hope he gets a home, but if he doesn't - well, I'm pretty sure that after 9 years the shelter must seem like a home to him. Those humans have certainly taken good care of him.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  29. Huey is so beautiful. It breaks my heart how anyone could hurt any animal like that. He is lucky to have a friend like you pip. I hope one day finds a home....But for now, at least he is being taken care of....

  30. Thanks for all your well wishes for Huey! Besides his first abusive home, the shelter is all the only home he has known. Red Door is a cageless shelter so he gets to move around and he gets TONS of love from the volunteers and other cats. We wish he could have a home of his own, but I think he is pretty happy at the shelter. He has ongoing medical issues and as I mentioned, has no control over his bladder. This would be a lot for someone to take on, BUT maybe his angel is out there and he will have a home some day.

P.S.: Huey is on facebook as Huey Bruno if you want to be his pal.

  31. You are right, Huey is a hero!! I hope his angel finds him and gives him a wonderful home but I'm happy that he's so content at Red Door!!
